Ever since its creation about six and a half decades ago, Pakistan was ruled by Military Dictators for a total period of around thirty four years, punctuated by spells of democratically elected government. Tragically, the elected governments with the exception of the government headed by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (1971-77) were either the creation of army, or survived at the pleasure of its own chief of Army Staff.This book attempts to comprehensively and objectively study, survey, evaluate and interpret factors and events that went into making Pakistan vulnerable to Army“take-over.” It lends perspective to events and highlights the role of political leaders and army Generals during the fateful days exposing conspiracies and illuminating many grey and dark areas. It also presents a critical assessment of the Indo-Pak relations and contours of US-Pak engagements.M.M. Khajooria retired as Director General of Jammu & Kashmir Police. An administrator with wide and varied experience, he has the distinction of being the first IPS officer to be appointed as Commissioner of a Division (Poonch-Rajouri) in 1979 and State Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner (after the Indo-Pak War of 1971). He also served as Director General, Transport and Head of the J&K Prison Department.He is a columnist of repute, a recognised security analyst and an eminent seminarian. He has written extensively on a wide range of subjects including politico-security scenario in Jammu &Kashmir, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia, with special emphasis on Pan-Islamic fundamentalism and its linkage with Pakistan Army/ISI. He is associated with the Centre for Regional and Strategic Studies of Jammu University and Institute for Management and Public Administration.
