The book Guru Hargobind Sahib has been taken from Macauliffe`s Sikh Religion (6 vols.) to make it an independent treatise on the life, teachings and achievements of Guru Hargobind Sabih. Max Arthur Macauliffe, the Celebrated author of Sikh Religion says in the preface to his Voluminous work, "There can be no doubt that, were the Gurus and Bhagats now alive, they would be pleased to see their compositions translated into a language, like the English spoken by many peoples throughout the continents and islands which extend far and wide over the earth." And The Khalsa, a popular Sikh publication of a century ago, wrote, "There can be no denying the fact that the publication of Mr. Macauliffe`s work will be the introduction of a new ear in our history. Alomost a century later, taday we find his work still the most authoritative in the field of Sikh Studies and ever a beacon of true scholarship. The period of Guru Hargobind Sahib`s pontifship had been momentous as he gave a new shape to the Sikh teaching, to principles and practice. He established the Akal Takht and reinterpreted the institution of Miri-Piri. But there has been little of exclusive writing on the life and times of the Guru that we thought we would be doing a service to the cause of Sikh Studies if we could bring out an authoritative biography of the Guru Sahib for the Benefit of growing readership worldwide. What better biography there could be than the one coming from the pen of an acknowleged scholar, Max A. Macauliffe, which carries, additionally, an assurance of being shorn of "puerile, heterodox or repulisve details" that have most often tended to slip in any accounts of the lives of Gurus.
