The book is based on the travelogue. The author reveals that at a general meeting of the East India Company held after Captain Best’s return, the Governor (Sir Thomas Smythe) summed up the achievements of the voyage by saying that Best had performed worthy service, both for the honour of this kingdom and English nation and for the settling of a beneficial trade in Cambaia, for the good of this Company: a service of very great moment and consequence, in the prosecuting whereof he had many oppositions, assaults, and sundry attempts made by the Portugalls, divers fights and encounters. It gives a fair account of the outstanding features of the venture, and it explains why the Tenth Voyage has always been considered to have been of special importance in the early history of the East India Company. The book is the product of extensive study of this Voyage and its success. The author has included five maps to clear the picture of this voyage. Though the book is a rare one, it may be recognized even by those who dissent from the author’s views.
