Faqir Chand Kohli of Tata Consultancy Service is widely acknowledged as the man who pioneered India’s IT revolution. Born in Peshawar in 1924, he finished his schooling in India, before obtaining a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Queen’s University, Canada, and a master’s degree in the same from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
He returned to India in 1951 to work with the Tata Electric Companies where he made significant contributions to the field of power engineering. That same year, he established India’s first load dispatch centre. During his eighteen-year associating with the Indian power industry, he played an instrumental role in introducing a number of modern management techniques for power systems.
He joined Tata Consultancy Service in 1969. The company comprised ten consultants. Under his stewardship, the company has grown in size and stature, and is India’s leading IT company, providing holistic IT-based solutions to organizations in diverse business areas from around the world. A strong believer in the necessity of training and research and development for a software organization, F.C. Kohli ensured that a substantial percentage of T.C.’s revenue focused on these areas.
In the year 2000, the company had fourteen thousand consultants in its employ, a far cry from the ten F.C. Kohli started out with.
