This book brings together two of the most powerful and relevant philosophical critiques of human rights in current debate, from the postcolonialist and post-Althusserian perspectives. Forcing them to enter into mutual confrontation and dialogue, it lays out the conflict between the formal, abstract nature of human rights, and their concrete, plural and often violent manifestations. The book is organized in three parts: at each end, the postcolonialist and the post-Althusserian critiques are represented by their main thinkers (Ratna Kapur, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Upendra Baxi on the one hand; introduction and conclusion change the very terms and rules of the dialogue, organizing it either between emancipatory universalism and inefficient particularism (from the perspective of the post-Althusserians), or as a Eurocentric ruse glorifying hypocrisy (from the perspective of the postcolonialists). It is left to the readers to determine the position they find most convincing and acceptable.isbn-9780415615297
