This book comprises of the travels of two employees of the Dutch East India Company who travelled independent of each other. Voyages and travels, into Brasil, and the East-Indies: containing, an exact description of the Dutch Brasil, and divers parts of the East-Indies; their provinces, cities, living creatures, and products; the manners, customs, habits, and religion of the inhabitants: with a most particular account of all the remarkable passages that happened during the author`s stay of nine years in Brasil; especially, in relation to the revolt of the Portugueses, and the intestine war carried on there from 1640 to 1649, as also, a most ample description of the most famous city of Batavia, in the East-Indies. The author, a Dutch traveler and official, left two very interesting accounts of his years spent in Dutch Brazil and the Dutch East Indies. In his several travels in the East, he visited Dutch South Africa, Sumatra, Java, Amboyna, Formosa, China, Malacca, India, Ceylon, Persia, and St. Helena. His narratives give very informative accounts of the places he visited. His work was first published (in English) as the second volume of the 1704 first edition of Awnsham and John Churchill’s four-volume Collection of Voyages and Travels (thus the “Vol. II” at the foot of the title page), although the present volume is at times offered separately, as here. The book is profusely illustrated with engravings that compliment the narrative.
