In the words of the author, in spite off a profusion of book on the subject, “a work was still wanted which should place the public in possession not merely of such facts as been upon the political phase of the subject, but also of a faithful picture, social and industrial, of the many races comprising of the people of British India”. Having a long association with the Indian Press and a long stay here, which brought him in close contact with civilians, merchants and planters, the author considered himself able to treat the subject justly. The book is divided into four parts: historical, political, physical and moral, and has 29 chapters with numerous illustrations.
