A Collection of hymns from the Tamil hymn compendiums called Devaram and Tiruvachagam. The first of these is held to be canonical by the Tamil Saivites. This book is a collection of 136 stanzas and offers a short note on the poets before the start of their hymns. This book is a reprint of the 1921 edition. The authors would have wished, had it been possible, to alter the note on stanza 17 (p. 27), which is there treated as a case of intercession for others. Fuller comparison of this hymn with other similar ones in Tamil religious poetry convinces them that the ‘she’ in the hymn is none other than the devotee, who compares himself to a love-sick woman, as in stanza 19. They think that if only a person had a Hindu-hymn book, he thinks he could learn from it the spirit of Hinduism as well as a non-Christian could learn Christianity from Christian hymns. At such a time these hymns are worth looking into, for they are sung in temples and homes throughout the Tamil country, and Tamil is mother-tongue of more than eighteen millions of people. The book contains few good illustrations also.
