The book has been compiled in the interest of the European and the Indian school students. The author feels that a few words of introduction appear necessary because it is a new compilation based on those of Rev Amos Sutton and William Brooks. Those who are acquainted with Brooks’ book will find that many words not in ordinary use have been omitted and a large number of other useful words introduced. This book has been increased by about 40 pages. According to the author, it is not claimed that the present compilation is in any way exhaustive, but it is hoped that it may be found more useful that its predecessors. In giving the English equivalents of the Oriya words an attempt has been made to put the one mainly used in the first place, those following being in order of importance, as far as possible. It is often difficult to know what words many be used in ordinary polite conversation and what words are only used in literature. Great care has been taken and a large amount of time has been extended in the endeavour to give the right shades of meaning in English, but success may not have been attained in all cases.
