The present work is intended to furnish an answer to a question that is often and properly asked about any study of which the use and advantages are not immediately obvious. In the following chapters we have attempted to show what coins can teach us; what is their value as documents of history and monuments of art; and what relations they bear to other branches of historical, artistic and archaeological research. The book will be found of service to the antiquary and the collector of coins. It is hoped that the present work may prove of value to many who have been accustomed to regard the science of numismatics as little better than a distraction.
