About the Book: -The author has made a good attempt to discuss the festivals of Hindus. He feels that it is difficult and dangerous to generalize about India. The customs and manners which are observed in one part may be wholly unknown in another section of the country. These differences excite little interest among the peoples, for there is nothing strange in the phenomenon. Despite there are about 2378 castes and innumerable sub-castes among the Hindus, illustrating the fact, that in India differences are emphasized and proudly maintained. Being a study of different festivals of the Hindus, the author does point out in the introduction, that the various festivals noticed in the book differ according to the geographical, or caste affinities. While describing the festivals, the author gives the mythological history of the festival noticed. The book starts with a list of Hindu months and Hindu festivals, and then follows the subject matter of the work. In the introduction, the author makes an impassioned plea against the caste system and all associated evils and prejudices.
