Metal Forming which is considered the back bone of manufacturing industry, could not be included as a subject in the curriculum of many technical universities in India for a longtime, mainly due to the non-availability of teachers trained in the subject and lack of appropriate study material. The author has conducted research in metal forming and has taught the subjects of Metal Forming Analysis and Metal Forming Technology to the graduate and undergraduate students of IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi for a total period of more than 35 years, during which time, he also guided many Ph.D scholars and M.Tech. students for their projects. The book has been written in the same way as the subject was taught by the author over so many years. The presentation of the material is such that the students should not feel any difficulty in understanding theory of plasticity and metal forming analysis. The book emphasizes the analysis of forming processes and the developments in metal forming technology.
The contents are spread over 14 chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the forming properties of materials. The second chapter describes conventional, non-conventional and newer forming processes. It also acquaints the reader with stress states to which the material is subjected to in the different forming processes. The chapters three, four and five deal with the stress analysis, strain analysis, yield conditions, stress and strain/strain-rate relations, basic equations in plasticity and the methods of solving them. The chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 deal with analysis of forging, rolling, wire drawing, tube drawing, extrusion and sheet metal forming processes. Chapter 12 deals with transverse rolling processes and manufacture of seamless tubes and pipes. Chapter 13 deals with friction in metal forming and methods of measuring friction. Chapter 14 describes laboratory experiments in metal forming and design of several rigs which may be constructed in a college workshop for conducting the experiments.
Salient Features:
Easy to understand style. A student with elementary knowledge of vectors can understand the subject. There is thoroughness in the treatment of topics. Contains many recent developments in forming processes as well as the new topics of research. A number of exercises are included at the end of every chapter. Answers are also given for many numerical exercises. The book is written primarily for undergraduate students. However, several topics are useful for graduate students as well. It is an excellent reference book for advanced work in the subject. The theoretical background for various technological developments can be highly useful to practicing engineers.
