This book has been written for those who are most concerned with an introduction to the topic of schizophrenia in particular context to Indian culture. A substantive attention has been given to cross cultural research findings as an aid in understanding the impact of culture in symptomatology. Special attention has been given to biological, psychophysiological, neuropsychological, and genetics data, personality theories, psychopathology with special reference to Indian family relationships, and interpersonal experiences.
Instead of elaborating traditional areas of discussion, e.g., detailing diagnostic classifications (DSM/ICD), the text includes chapters that are often overlooked in books on this topic. Included are, e.g., chapters on classification which highlights existing contradictions, confusions, and focuses on need for culture bound modification. Also chapters have been devoted to aetiology, diagnosis and differential diagnoses. Different types of psychotherapies including pharmacotherapy are described; throughout focus has been given onto need for introducing indigenous psychotherapy to suit values and norms of our culture.
Vocational training and psychosocial rehabilitation programmes have been depicted. Also the community mental health movement and the human relations training approaches are discussed, keeping in view the resources and limitations of Indian culture.
