This book is a condensed edition of the original work which was issued in 2 volumes. The author arrived in India in 1852 as a sub-altern, and rose through the ranks to eventually become the Commander-in-Chief. This memoir of his traces his career through times of peace and war. The Indian revolt of 1857 “ 58 finds special notice, as does the 2nd afghan war, where is distinguished himself and was subsequently called Lord Roberts of Kandahar. The book also throws light on policy matters, both civil and military, where the author is very open in his opinions. Frederick Roberts arrived in India in 1852 as a sub-altern, and departed in 1893 as the Commander-in-Chief. This biography is a soldiers memoir, and details all the military campaigns that he was a part of. The most significant was the 2nd Afghan war in 1878, where he distinguished himself, and earned the title of Roberts of Kandahar. In this book the reader will find mention of other campaigns “ like the one in Burma. The work is replete with personal observation of the author on the British and well as the natives of India. He describes their cantonment and military lives, the customs, the history, the prevailing systems of law and land ownership, etc. A large part of the book is dedicated to the mutiny of 1857, has and graphic of the campaigns in Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and other minor locations of engagements. This book too lays to rest the question of the greased cartridge that was the catalyst for the mutiny : he admits that the cartridge was indeed greased with tallow and lard.
