The book is an outcome of the deliberations held during the two day Seminar on Central and Western Himalayas organized on 25th and 26th November, 2002 at Anthropological Survey of India. North-West Regional Centre, Dehradun in the in the International year of Mountains. Out of 25 papers presented in the Seminar, 16 papers were selected for the present book from the of physical Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Sociology and Linguistics, with the hope to not only have better understating of the uniqueness and the variations in terms of biological and socio-cultural aspects of the Himalayan Societies located in the Central and Western parts of the Himalayans, but would also provide some useful insights on the pressing problems of the Himalayan people which would be of practical relevance to the administrators, planners and other welfare agencies.
