Book Summary of Land, Water, Language & Politics in Andhra
(Regional Evolution in India Since 1850)
The debate over land reform, policies on irrigation and linguistic identity has shaped the fortunes of various governments in India. This book ex- plores these close connections between land, water, language and politics, and explains how these have shaped politics in Andhra Pradesh from 1850 down to the present day.
Taking a historical perspective, the book discusses how innovations in irrigation by the British transformed the economy from food crops to cash crops, thus creating new markets for local entrepreneurs and stimulating increased education and social reform in the region. This in turn supported the new politics in search of constitutional concessions. Subsequently, the drive for a Telugu language-based province arose in concert, and those political resources were then used to determine local patterns down to and after independence.
Based on extensive archival research and the author`s long-standing inter- est in the making of this region, the book recounts a lesser-known story of dramatic, far-reaching consequences.
