In order to attain industrial and technological self-reliance, the planners envisaged the development and building up of indigenous expertise and stock of technically trained manpower as an inalienable part of the state’s development strategy. As a sequel to this policy, a tremendous effort was made by the Government to create a massive infrastructure to train and built up locally groomed expertise and skilled manpower. The Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are one of the major institutions that provide technically trained manpower in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the over production of technically trained manpower, with less regard to the absorption capacity of the labour market will result in unemployment among these skilled labour force. In view of rapidly changing social, economic, political and technological scenario, the technically trained manpower requirements also change which demands for constant monitoring of manpower requirements. Therefore, the assessment of the impact of training courses in the ITIs and evaluation of the track record of the placement of the trainees is essential for the relevant authorities to identify gaps between the demand and supply of the technically trained personnel as well as to take suitable action in advance.
