Education was viewed as a means not only for promoting the socioeconomic development of the population, but it was the only source though which the marginalized can be mainstreamed. The Scheduled Caste population constituting about 16.26 per cent to the total population of the country. Majority of them are poor, illiterate, based in the rural areas, depending on the manual work as their source of income. In order to mainstream them, the Government has adopted multidimensional developmental strategies to promote their status. The education of the school aged children and improving the literacy among them was one of the important strategy adopted for developing and promoting human resources among Scheduled Castes. The larger goal of the strategy is to promote the human resources among them and to apply these resources in the economy so as to socialize them with the other groups, provide and opportunity for social mobility and to bring social change in the society towards them. Keeping the above backdrop, the present study was formulated to study the participation and consequences of the education among Scheduled Castes in the State of Andhra Pradesh as a part of multi-centric studies sponsored by the NCERT.
