This book deals with international trade issues, their connections with food security and the wel being of the poor in developing countries. Dissatisfied with the dominant anti trade and anti globalisation stands taken by many civil society organisations including NGOs, trade unions and women`s organisations, the authors take an unconventional approach to these concerns. Arguing against the tendency to negate trade as such, the book points to the necessary of differentiated trade rules based on levels of economic development. It makes a case for a shift from a regime of subsidies to one of productivity enhancements, and argues for the globalisationof countervailing powers so as to improve labour standards. In order to prevent a race to the bottom in labour and environment standards, global action is a necessary concomitant to national action , The book argues for ttrade but not for equal access, or the same rules, for all countries . It Will be of particular interest to these in the fields of development studies.Political science, sociology and south asian studies.isbn-9780415479868
