During the last 20 years, technology became a major factor on the library scene. Staying on top of that technology is now more difficult because of its proliferation. There is available a much wider range of choices in applications to the acquisition, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. Although automation is an evolutionary process, there have been several developments in information technology which may be characterised as revolutionary in terms of their actual of potential impact on the library. Technology, networking, and the expanding information marketplace represent a combination of factors affecting librarians and those who make administrative decisions about libraries. Technological advances suggest that the nature of fundamental library operations, and possibly even the basic social role of libraries, may change markedly.
