An authentic and fully documented historical account of the most turbulent period of Sikh history, starting with the organised and systematic compaigns of Banda Bahadur, a recluse and a hermit, whose life was transformed into a valiant fighter and an astute commander under the inspiring leadership of Guru Gobind Singh. The period following the era of Banda Bahadur was an interregnum of the rule of various Sikh Misls whose internecine feuds ultimately brought about their own downfall. Maharaja Ranjit Singh then appeared on the scene and consolidated his position step by step. A liberal Emperor, a shrewd statesman and a benign monarch, he ruled over Punjab from one end of the land upto Kabul. The end of his reign brought about complete disintegration in the kingdom. The treacherous courtiers and Ministers brought about the fall of the Sikh Empire, which Maharaja Ranjit Singh had built gradually with great foresight. The book is a most revealing account of the year 1708-1849 A.D. based on the writings of contemporary historians and bears the stamp of the author`s painstaking efforts in unraveling the mysteries of the happenings behind the scenes which the readers would find most fascinating. 2000-2nd revised and enlarged edition
