The present volume, State and Diplomacy under Tipu Sultan: Documents and Essays, edited and introduced by Irfan Habib, is a supplement to Confronting Colonialism: Resistance and Modernization under Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, which was published in 1999 by the Indian History Congress as part of the Srirangapatnam bicentennial. The main object of the volume is not only to add fresh contributions to the papers collected in Confronting Colonialism, but also to present to the reader documentary evidence that has probably not received its due in studies on Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan. It is hoped that the translations of texts, commentaries on documents and nterpretive essays contained here will mark a further stage of progress in the exploration and use of source material on Tipu Sultan in both Persian and French. Irfan Habib, formerly Professor of History at Aligarh Muslim University, is a well- known historian and author of The Agrarian System of Mughal India 1556– 1707 (1963; second rev. edn 1999), An Atlas of the Mughal Empire (1982), and Essays in Indian History: Towards a Marxist Perception (1995). He is also the author of Prehistory (2001), the first in a series of monographs on a People’s History of India. 2001Hardback xxvi + 170 pages 8.5 x 5.5 inches ISBN 81-85229-50-3
