This book has usually been thought of only in connection with the discovery of Brazil. It is the purpose of this volume, therefore, to consider the voyage as a whole, including the influences which preceded it and the results which followed. With this general view in mind the voyage appears of greater importance, and some light is thrown on the question of the westward diversion of Cabral’s fleet during which Brazil was visited. An opportunity has thus been afforded for interpretation. This survey has been followed by more detailed discussions of special subjects. The names of places in the texts have usually been retained in their original forms but have been given their English equivalents elsewhere. This voyage contains letters, narratives, and extracts from diaries, etc., of 1500-1501, chiefly of Portuguese and Venetian origin, translated, with introduction and notes. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1938.
