A narrative of travels in Manchuria, across the Gobi desert, through the Himalayas, the Pamirs and Hunza (1884-1894). The author was the last of the Great Gamers, and this book is a classic account of a journey, with clandestine motives, from Peking to Srinagar around the year 1890. There are notices of other short journeys that he took, making the book span between the years 1884 to 1894. The main narrative of the book takes the reader from Peking to Manchuria, across the Gobi desert through Sinkiang, and then across the Himalaya mountains to Srinagar, in Kashmir. There is a lot of geographical information in this book, along with personal impression of the local politics of the regions that he travelled through. The book ends with a chapter on missionary activity in China. This book is a reprint of the 1904 edition, and has 9 illustrations and 1 map.
