The first comprehensive catalogue of Neplaese coins ever attempted. The term Coinage of Nepal means only those coins which were found in the valley of Kathmandu. It covers the period from the earliest issues, struck during the Lichhavi Dybasty until the end of the reign of Prithvi Vir Bikram Shah in 1911. More than 1400 coins are described and most are illustrated on the numerous plates. It is said that towards the hills there are several villages called takasar, i. e. , Mints. If it is an indication one may expect some more coinage, other than these found in the valley, which may throw further light on the history of Nepal. It can be classified into two broad divisions. The first group consists of the ancient coinage of the time of the Lichhavis while the second one, started during the Mall rule. In the first group all the coins are copper casts. The ancient period of the Nepal`s history starts with the inscriptions of the Licchavi king Mandeva I. The second set of inscriptions is more problematic. Some coins were also issued to commemorate some past Licchavi Kings like Mandeva and Ganadeva. But the main bulk of the coinage was issued in the time of Sivadeva I.
