This book is written in the form of most travel book which record and describes all that the author saw, heard, and experienced during his visit to the Ceylon in the early 1840’s. The book is the product of the reminiscences of the author. Once a noted scholar Bacon announced some centuries ago, that Nature had ceased to dispense novelties. “Nothing new can be either found or done, read or related: nothing new but as the moon is new, the old moon with her face turned the other way.” The following pages consequently cannot be expected to contain anything new, otherwise than as an old picture in a fresh light is new. Coffee-planting and Buddhism, elephant-shooting and leeches, are probably as familiar to many as cricket or crotchet. “Friend, be not tedious” said the Rajah of Travancore to a Christian missionary, in the sixteenth century, “remember life is short. This book also describes the people, their customs, religion, manners, commerce, produce, fauna and flora, the routes and roads etc., are all faithful recorded.
