In presenting this book to the public, the author has been actuated by the desire to leave his work in a more finished condition than on the first occasion. One London critic of the first series did him the honour to say that it ‘is now a fairly complete Indian Men of the Time, another, that the book is right-minded and high-minded. Surely the force of praise to an old Anglo-Indian author could no further go, and there is great satisfaction in hoping that the Series now given will afford a better title to deserve it. The principal sketches are far less numerous than in the former Series, and some of them, perhaps, of not so highly important a character. But they are all of men who have done really good work for, and deserved well of, their country. It is a nostalgic journey down the aisles of the British Raj which recounts the life and careers of some known and lesser known Englishmen. The people mentioned were in service about the 1850’s. It contains a portrait of the author. This book is a reprint of the 1888 edition.
