The chief aim of the present volume is to provide the general reader with a brief, yet it is hoped sufficiently comprehensive, account of the principles underlying scientific psychotherapy. The book is thus of the nature of a “popular” manual and may perhaps be described as a primer in scientific psychotherapy. But the writer trusts that it will not on that account be found devoid of usefulness to the physician and psychologist and that it may be the means of stimulating in some measure a broader interest in investigations that are unquestionably of tremendous importance to humanity, particularly in this age of hurry, unrest, and “nerve strain.”
