The following is the first of a series of articles intended to depict ‘Life in Ancient Ceylon’ from material available in authentic histories, published or otherwise. The rest of the articles will deal respectively with The People, Religion, Government, and Warfare. It was the recognition of this right of the Kalinga-vansa that impelled the ministers of Vijaya, upon his death without issue, to send for a prince from India who was a kinsman of Vijaya’s. Panduvasudeva fulfils this requirement, and he comes over and assumes the sovereignty of Lanka as of right. An extract from the journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1918 which deals with the various aspects of the kingship in Ceylon.
