The author has made a noble attempt to give an account of the past and the present of the Paper Currency System in India. It was prepared substantially in its present form and approved by the University of Calcutta as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Having noticed the latest landmark in the currency history of India, namely the report of the Hilton-Young Commission, he has updated the present version. There is however no fixity and finality of things during a transition period. New happenings may soon make new currency history and events move too quickly. Although this uncertainty of outlook is a handicap, it leads at the same time additional weight to the necessity of a clear understanding of the past and of the present. His main purpose has been to deal exclusively with the paper currency, isolating it, as far as it bears such isolation, from the rest of the monetary system. The product of the book is extensive study of paper currency. The subject of the book is interesting and it generates a good amount of interest among readers.
