This book is result of 25 years work of this missionary in Travancore (now a part of Kerala). It is a ready reference, work for the many and varied aspects of this area. There are 38 chapters which notice the history, customs, caste structures, rituals, festivals, mode of life, legends of the various castes that inhabit Travancore. Among the sects described are : Pulayars, Vedars, Kuravars, Paraihas, Ilavars, Shanars, potters, Namburis, etc. the book, after noticing these castes, gives other chapters on : the Kudumi (tuft of hair), agriculture, plantaions and manufactures, music, slavery, ways of worship, reforms, missionary work, etc. The book has 46 illustration that accompany the text.
