About the book-: In this I propose to give an account of life of Hindus, which is largely the result of worship of these deities. Having lived many years in India, and met with all the classes of the community in the cities and the villages, and having conversed with them in their own language, I have learned much that is not to be found in the books written on this most interesting subject. This book is about the abstained from the comment on the character of the practices of the people, my work here is rather that of a chronicler than of a preacher. In writing of the mythology of the Hindus, I felt that the most powerful refutation of Hinduism was a fair statement of what their books themselves teach concerning the character and conduct of the beings whom they worship as divine; and in describing the everyday life of the Hindus, which is the practical outcome of such worship, there seems to me to be but little necessity for comment.
