The wishes of the author’s associates abroad, and the friends of missions at home, induced the compiler to attempt the preparation of this memoir, though it was undertaken amidst the distractions and multiplied engagements of a visit to his native land, which the claims of the heathen forbade him to protract. As a member of the American Mission in Ceylon for 13 years from 1820 to 1833, she gives an account of her observation and experience. Covering a span of over 400 years in North, Central and South America as well as the Caribbean, this collection highlights the society, politics, religious beliefs, culture, contemporary opinions and momentous events of the time.
