The author has made a noble attempt to depict the history of India by portraying its past and present through these two volumes of the book. This 2 volumes work gives a popular history of the various people of India, geographical information, and a narrative of the history of various cities of India. The book is well-illustrated showing panoramas, natives, and monuments. This account of India in the early 20th century provides us with an overview of the country`s colorful history and culture, and then examines the various regions in more detail. Photographs of the exotic locales add interest. The work ends with a glossary of commonly-used Indian words, some of which--bungalow, khaki, and bazaar, for example-have entered the English language. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. With one folding map tipped in at back of volume II, one full-page map, and illustrated with 50 photographic plates. It was first published in 1903.
