According to the author Kannada lesser-known as Kanarese is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by people of Karnataka in Southwestern India and by linguistic minorities in the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala and Goa and also by Carnatican ex-pats abroad. It is one of the scheduled languages of India and the official and administrative language of the state of Karnataka. Kannada was the court language of some of the most powerful empires of South and Central India, such as the Chalukya dynasty, the Rashtrakuta dynasty, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Hoysala Empire. This present work is a compilation of five lectures that the author gave in late 1926 and early 1927. It has five chapters that discuss, and offer learned information on: the classification of the language; the Dravidian languages being distinct from Sanskrit; antiquity of the name Kannada; lexical affinities; Kannada 1000 years ago; comparison with the Tamil alphabet; grammar; inflexions; verbs; roots; abstract nouns; northern and southern schools; metathesis; reforms and advancement of the language. This book is a reprint of the 1934 edition.
