In this edition, besides the usual corrections, many important changes have been introduced and attempts have been made to effect some improvements. It was found out at actual teaching that the keys to the Families, although of considerable use in the field for the practical purpose of quickly ` running down ’ a plant to its Family, were nevertheless essentially of an artificial nature, and therefore could not convey to the student a clear idea of the distinctive characters and relative positions of the Families.
