This compendium of papers, presented at a International Conference, organised by the Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication, Mangalayatan University, attempts to address the critical issues concerning civic challenges, democracy and media. Analysing the role of diverse media contents in democracy, it discusses at length the political benefits and inconvenience of electronic media, freedom of expression, problems faced by print as well as electronic media, role of media in the 21st century Indian society and the challenges of sustainable democracy. Further examining the contribution of media as a fourth pillar of democracy, the book describes in detail the real democratisation of society through media, various issues and concerns of media, role of media in mitigating the problem of child labour, corruption in communication, and issues of street children as highlighted by media. A discussion on media cultural studies, spiritual journalism and the role of media in safeguarding democracy finds place in the book as well.Neeraj Khattri, a senior academician and researcher in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication, did his PhD on Impact of Mass Media on HIV/AIDS Awareness in Delhi Slums from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Many of his research papers have been published in books and research journals of repute. He has attended more than thirty national and international seminars and conferences. His areas of interest include media research and development communication. Dr. Khattri has been an active member of four international media organisations—IAMCR, ECREA, IYMS, and AYJW. Presently, he is Secretary General of Association of Communication and Media Studies, New Delhi.
