The narrator of this narrative has collected all the materials in Ceylon, principally from Kandyan chiefs high in office, and conversant with business, and who were constantly in attendance at the court of the dethroned monarch, during a residence on that station, on the Medical Staff of the Army, from August, 1816, to February, 1820. It is sufficient to mention, that the narrative of Travels, which constitutes the Second Part, is introduced with the design of illustrating the preceding topics, and for the purpose of describing the scenery of the country, and that the medical sketch relative to the climate and its diseases, and the preservation of health, which concludes the work, is not offered to the professional so much as to the general reader. The book is the product of the extensive study of the Ceylon cultural heritage. The subject of the book is very interesting. There is no statement in the book to which exception may justly be taken. The illustrations and maps require a word of explanation which he preserves from oblivion to make the script beneficial for all.
