About the Book :-During his two and a half years’ residence at the Surat factory the book is the product of the author‘s extensive study and research work. Keeping the importance of the subject matter of the book, he managed to collect a number of facts about the native inhabitants, Hindu, Mahommedan, and Parsi. He was a keen and diligent observer, and his picture of contemporary Indian life, customs, and religious observances is accurate as well as entertaining. Particularly valuable are his remarks about the Parsis, whom he describes as four in their calling very industrious and diligent, and careful to train up their children to Arts and Labour’. He described Mughal influence, religious and cultural particularities Hindus and Parsees finally speculate on the status of the fakir, Muslim hermit. The author gives a large account of the city and its inhabitants and of the English factory there. This book is important for the readers who want to know more about our old treasure. The present edition is a verbatim reproduction of the original (1696) issue, except that a number of obvious printer’s errors have been corrected. To the 1696 edition was added an Appendix containing a late Revolution in the Kingdom of Golconda. A description of the Kingdoms of Arracan and Pegu. An Account of the coins of the Kingdoms of India, Persia, Golconda, etc. The book also contains a plate and five illustrations.
