This thin book is on the history of Cutch, mainly from the time that it has been concerned with the British. Cutch, also spelled Kutch or Kachchh also historically known as Kingdom of Kutch, was a kingdom in the Kutch region from 1147 to 1819 and a princely state under British rule from 1819 to 1947. Its territories covered the present day Kutch region of Gujarat north of the Gulf of Kutch. Bordered by Sindh in the north, Cutch State was one of the few princely states with a coastline. Some time resident in the province of Cutch, and remarking with much interest many local peculiarities, the author is led to imagine that a few slight sketches of its more striking characteristics may be thought worthy of notice. These pages are the result of a series of notes, taken during a residence of some years in Cutch; during which he has enjoyed unusual opportunities of becoming acquainted with the general and domestic manners of the population in its various castes. This book contains three sections: a short first section gives a brief survey of the history of this region before the coming of the British; sections 2 and 3 give the history of the province up till the treaties of 1816 and 1819. This book is a reprint of the 1839 edition.
