This book by Sir John Malcolm in its first volume presents a series of extensive descriptions about Central India. This particular volume has twelve chapters that include observations on the geography, soil, climate, and produces of the region. The author also covers the history of Malwa, Mahratta invasion, descriptions about the families of the Puars of Dhar and Dewas, Sindia and Holkar, events at the Court of Holkar, Nabobs of Bhopal, as well as governments of the states of Central India in this volume. Volume 2 contains Malcolm`s recommendations for the future of British rule in Malwa. The volume also has an extensive appendix of over 200 pages of primary texts.
