In the following Glossary the author has tried, by means of classification, to produce a comprehensive and handy work of reference of practical utility for the Kanarese parts of India. An arbitrary but convenient plan of grouping together technical and other words under different heads has been adopted; and this arrangement will, he hopes, be found suitable for purposes of ready reference by persons interested in a particular subject, by translators of official documents and the several Administrations. Official terms have been explained, and the use of words localised; information scattered in various works, inaccessible to many owing to their value or rarity, brought together and concentrated to effect a saving of time and labor. A general index has also been added. He thought it beside his purpose to give the origin or derivation of words, or to indicate, as such, the foreign words which have by long use become naturalized in the Kanarese language. The usefulness of a work like this is a matter of trial and time. He is conscious that the work is capable of improvement both as to matter and execution. He trusts, however, that the labor spent on the work will be duly appreciated by the public, and that friends and critics will enable him to enhance its practical usefulness by suggestions and corrections for a future edition.
