This book is a history of the Portuguese occupation in India written in the Portuguese language. The book is in two volumes. In these books the author discusses the then minister and secretary state of affairs of the navy and overseas, from various official commissions in Portuguese India, who stayed there for nine years, performing the various services that are indicated at the end of the second part of this book. During that period, and at times that the public service it left them free, they collected the materials from the book, which they now publish, not moved by the love of glory, nor by interest, which is not for its value or their ambience dog, but rather stimulated by the intimate desire to be useful to their country, perpetuating the glorious monuments and ruins that they saw there, an eloquent testimony of their past greatness in Asia. Such is the main purpose of this publication. They will follow their memories, pointing out the results of some studies, to the drawings of the natural, which they present, as to various points of geography, history, geology, meteorology, agriculture, statistics, ethnography, religion, uses, customs and laws of the people of the State of India. They also know that their work is imperfect; nor could it be complete, if not with long years, dedicated especially to the studies they have outlined. What others, and more competent feel encouraged by reading of their book to pursue this agenda, and they will have achieved the end to which they propose. The book is illustrated with 382 engravings and has seven maps. The book is a reprint of the 1886 edition.
