To justify the publication of a Gazetteer of the countries adjacent to India on the north-west, the author delved into deep to procure the materials for publishing of both the volumes of work. It is only necessary to advert to the manifest want of such a work, more especially, since, from recent events, the countries to which it relates have acquired a new and extraordinary interest. It is obvious that no general Gazetteer can be expected to furnish the minute and varied information which a similar work of more exclusive character may conveniently afford, and it is to be lamented, that the only sources of information accessible to general perusal are, in very many instances, calculated to mislead. The Gazetteer is thus an epitome of all that has yet been written and published respecting the countries adjacent to and westward of the Indus. Both the volumes of product are extensive study of India’s ancient history and literature. Though the volume I and volume II are a rare one, it may be recognized even by those who dissent from the author’s views.
