Fruit growing has assumed greater significance since 1980 and as a commercial trade since 1990. Govt. of Maharashtra has initiated EGS Linked Fruit tree planting programme w.e.f. 1990 and is very popular with fruit growers. N.H.M. schemes started in India since 2005 giving great impetus to fruit culture.
Dryland Horticulture is a new branch dealing with fruits, vegetables and flowers which are rainfed and come up in Dryland conditions. Since the rainfall is erratic and uneven, it is utmost necessary to boost up cultivation of dryland fruit trees.
The revised Horticulture Course prescribed by ICAR New Delhi for B.Sc. (Agril.) and B.Sc. (Horti.) students in India has been started recently in all Agril./Horti. Colleges.
