The present need-based book summarises important correlations about interpretation of structures-i.r. frequencies (both theoretical and experimental) out of a vast amount of data available in a number of excellent encyclopedic books. Chapter 2 deals with a short elementary introduction about the calculation methodology of Normal Co-ordinate Analysis. It will induce
students to understand the theory behind assigning a particular band to a functional group or normal mode. Chapter 3 deals with the statistical correlations of the i.r.-frequency data with a number of examples not found in many other books. Well-known sources are like (i) Infrared Spectroscopy and Molecular Structure edited by M. David, Elsevier Publications, London, 1963 and (ii) T. Comlay “Infrared Spectroscopy, Allyn & Bacon, Boston, 1972. Chapter 4 consists of two parts. Part A contains (i) A short description of various spectroscopies with different optics used and (ii) method of recording their spectra including precautions to be used in the measurements. Part B deals with the approach to analyse the spectrum thus obtained with a number of examples. Chapters 5 contains more than 350 questions with answers for practice. The students are advised to independently solve the questions and look to answers only for confirmation. Appendix I lists
the i.r. band positions of functional groups. Appendix II gives character tables for different point groups. Both appendices are comprehensive.
