Ram Krishna is a 40 year old painter and the chairman of Hyderabad`s Lalit Kala Arts Academy. A painter of nudes, Krishna is fascinated by the concept of death and is obsessed with thoughts of his wife’s infidelity. An insecure Krishna himself engages in adultery with Rezia, the daughter of Nawab Suleiman Ali, a landowner. Soon, Krishna is murdered and hovers above Earth waiting to be reincarnated.
While he waits, the dead painter has conversations with the God of Death, Yama. He is chastised for his immorality and selfish attitude by Yama. He views his funeral processions and listens to the musings of the people he has left behind. He is disappointed that besides his parents, few friends, and his dog, no one really misses him. The protagonist also comes across other departed souls and witnesses a rebellion at Nawab Suleiman Ali`s house.
