This book, written by one of India’s most respected scholar and statesman Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, contains the complete text of each verse of the Bhagwat Gita in Sanskrit, its translation into English, and is accompanied by commentaries thereupon. The book starts with comments on this work by the most influential figures in modern Indian history, wherein they notice and commend the efforts of the Lokmanya and of the translator Mr Sukthankar; they also share thoughts on what The Gita means to them, its place and influence upon their lives, and upon the general importance of The Gita as a philosophical work; among the contributors are Mahatama Gandhi, Swami Vivekanada, Annie Besant, Pt. M.M. Malvia, G.K. Gokhale, Aurobindo Ghose, Meher Baba, Sophia Wadia, and others. The book then proceeds to elucidate upon the place.
The Bhagwat Gita holds in relation to the Mahabharat, the Upnishads, the Bhram-Sutras, Buddhistic literature, and the Christian Bible. The main body of the book notices each of the 18 chapters of The Gita separately, giving first the Sanskrit verse, then the translation, and follows up with copious and erudite commentaries on each verse. This edition of the Bhagwat Gita holds exceptional merit as it is the product of the scholar’s contemplation, as against the musings of so-called mystics and philosophers. This single volume (complete in itself) is part of a larger work in 2 volumes written by the Lokmanya, which contains, apart from this present book, a clear and scholarly exposition of the various schools of thought and concepts of Hindu philosophy. This work, originally in Marathi, was written by the Lokmanya while he was serving a prison sentence in Mandalay Jail in 1915; it was then translated into English by Mr Bhalchandra S. Sukthankar in 1934.
