This is the first of a series of volumes of selected papers of C.R. Rao. The research work of C.R. Rao spanning over half a century and published in various international journals has had an extraordinary impact on the development of many branches of statistical theory and methodology. The present volume contains 31 selected papers of C.R. Rao written during 1941-1954, including some of the most significant contributions to Inference, Design of Experiments and Multivariate Analysis which continue to be of perceptible importance to the state of the art.

The papers that have originally appeared in various journals have been retypeset to maintain uniformity in presentation.

Further volumes of selected papers from the total opus of C.R. Rao are under way and the whole set is expected to be available shortly.
