In 1809 the author of this book, Maria Graham, arrived in India, at Bombay. Her travels took here from Bombay to its surroundings, which included the caves of Carli, the Island of Elephanta, Salsette and Poona from Bombay she went to Ceylon where she went from Point de Galle to as far as Negombo and the visited Trincomale on the East of the Island, and landed back into India at Madras from there she went to Calcutta and in the beginning of 1811 she headed back for England. The Style of narration, in the authors own words “is that of an observant stranger”. She describes all she seen by way of customs, topography bazaars, art, mythology and very minor glimpses into the history of the place that she describes.
